My wife's 1998 Mitsubishi Lancer in Jamaica, Auto, Rhd, 1600 c.c. sohc has the following problems:

1. Frequently slams on sudden acceleration - whenever i ease off and then press accelerator suddenly there is a slight delay followed by a noticeable slam. It is not heard but can be felt. I have not been able to identify the source of the problem despite several professional diagnostics.

2. Screaming/squealing fan belt(s) on warm-up, and at intervals even after fully warmed up. I know it's the belt because if water is tipped on it the sound immediately stops, temporarily. I used belt dressings; tension the belt; changed numerous belts, but the problem even seem to increase. I am now considering changing the belt tensioner (which is somewhat costly here in Jamaica)

PLEASE PROS, WHAT ARE MY PROBLEMS?

'ONE LOVE - JAMAICA NO PROBLEM!'

it it your alternator belt that is squeaking? if so, you are probably pulling a large load on the electrical system.

1. If it's a sudden jerk then your transmission is begin to show signs of weakening to me. Has this been occuring long and is it getting worse? When was the last time you flushed and replaced tranny fluid? and How hard the mrs drive the car?

2. Tell us how many additional electronics you are running that aren't OEM. Radio, Audio, Fuel Management, E-manage, injectors....
All of that will pull a substantial draw on your electrical system. Turn on your dash lights while the engine is running and put a turn signal on. If your dash lights dim your alternator is seriously struggling to keep up and you need to look into a high output alternator.

2a) Double check the alignment of your pulleys, (Ensure they're mounted properly and the bearings are clean.) are you tearing up belts too? If not then perhaps the bearings are wearing out and need to be regreased (for those that can be) or replacing the units, if they've been in a long long time. power steering and/or alternator should be zeroed in for this one.
