View Full Version : genuine serial to usb cable
hello,
i was wondering if the genuine support cable has anything inbuilt to the cable or is it just a straight thought cable?.
reason i ask is while waiting for a DKU5 cable off of ebay i thought as my laptop has a serial port to just make my own serial to usb but i cant seem to get the thing to work i have used the diy tutorials to work out the pin out for the usb side but all im getting on the program is offline.
ive made sure com ports are right, changed bps but nothing the only thing i got was when the bps was on 2400 after you closed the program the orange light on the emb would flash a couple of times.
im running win7 and have run compatibility mode but still nothing.
ive also just read that the newer dku5 cables are no good to mod as the chips changed?? thoughts?

I'm pretty sure the Greddy support tool cable is a one-off deal.
Giff-Tech offers a discount to forum members for his clone cable.:)
any idea what makes it a one off cable??
if the dku5 mod fails i guess ill have to get a Giff-Tech cable then

people have had hit and miss results with the dku cable. with Giff's i know his response time can ben lengthy sometimes due to his workload but his cables have always worked to my knowledge.

if you have the OEM greddy cable already, this works wonders....
RPW tested, RPW approved.

unfortunately i don't have the oem cable, only a home made usb(emanage) to serial(laptop) but it doesn't work that's why i was wondering what makes the oem cable work
still waiting on the dku cable but i guess if i cant get that to work either ill have to get one of these griff tech ones
also is it normal to have the interaction light on (solid) all the time and once the cars started, flash??

yea, if your car is still running normally your good. a flashing red i would be concerned with.

Unknown. If you're looking for the genuine OEM cable you can get it from addictiveracing.net
or you can buy a cable from giff-tech. He makes good product.

I recently sent out on the wonderful world of making a clone cable. I tried the dku5 mod but have yet to get it to work. i do however have a laptop with a serial port and was able to find a solution. got the part needed in the mail yesterday wired it up and success.
a little background for you: USB data apparently supports voltage of 3.3v - 5v while the serial port uses upwards of 12v. basically what your looking for is something to convert this power to the appropriate level for the usb port on the emanage. what your looking for is RS232 - TTL also called a RS232 Shifter SMD. this is what makes the greddy cable special.
I'm torn on whether or not to make a writeup on how to make this cable, i hate to undercut giff.
what do you think mods? writeup or no? i don't want any harsh feelings for spilling the beans on this, but i know how much of a pain it was to find the info to make it work.

Definitely a write up. The more information the better. Good or bad it helps everyone to learn from eachother's experiences.

thats the answer i was looking for. im all about sharing what i learn, i mean, if no one shared, i wouldnt know anything. ill be cleaning up the cable so ill get some pics and start hashing out the writeup.
