View Full Version : Crazy idea that may actually work.

This may be a stupid idea but then again it does make sense to me. I wanted to see what you guys think.
I thought about taking my wideband and setting it to "lie" to my ECU. What I mean is that most NA cars make more power when running rich to a point. When you use a wideband you have to set the output so a stock ECU can use its feedback. So what I thought about doing is setting the Wideband to telling the ECU it is running 14.5:1 when it is really reading 14.0:1.
Does this sound Plausible?

If your wideband has that capability. I'm not sure mine does.

Why wouldn't you just do it the right way and remap your fuel curves? I'm also not sure how you would convert a wideband signal to make it work with your stock ECU.

I'm thinking he's talking about the simulated NB signal that the WB02 puts out.

Hmmm..wasn't aware that there were any widebands that do this. OP what wideband are you using?

TG, my Innovate LC-1 Wideband does it, and being that it is the most basic of their models, I'd say that prolly all the latest Innovate's have the second output wire for narrowband simulation.
But yes, mhamrick, what brand/model wideband you using?

Well crap you learn something new every day. The embarasing part is I've had an Innovate for 3 years now and didn't know it did that.:o

Bahaha! Bonus feature.
But do those subies use a wbo2 from factory? Actually, I got a leaner idle afr when I was using the simulated NB signal to feed my ECU. Not sure why that was but i tested it several times and it made a difference. I think I may have just had some goofey wiring at that time.

Subie is narrow band. I don't know of any cars that come with a wideband sensor stock. Doesn't mean they don't of coarse.

I see the Bosch sensors for vdubs so some newer vdubs must come with'em.

Bosch makes alot of the OEM narrow band sensors as well. Thats all I use for my sensor replacements.

The VW's from the late 90's actually had widebands. If you have the LC-1 (the one I have) and the O2 sensor poops on you you can actually buy the VW Passat O2 sensor cause it is exactly the same. They were actually used on the VW's before they were made for the aftermarket. The Bosch LSU 4.2 was a huge breakthough. Before it the wideband sensors were so expensive the tuners were the only ones that could afford it.
My point for actually lying to the ECU is basically to see if it can be done. It would be something nice to know just for the shits and giggles of it. I wouldn't want to do it by much. At the most say a .5 AFR if even that. The only benefit I could see this being is to the guys that want to turbo a car and can not afford a standalone and are stuck with a NA ECU or are saving up for their standalone.
Basically just an idea. I would like to see if it does work. I am by no means suggesting anyone do this I am asking others opinions to see if the idea is plausible. I agree with you turbineguy that it is best to do it properly by having the ECU maps correctly adjusted. For me that option does not exist with the craptastic 4AGE ECU in my 86 MR2.

Is this what you are talking about editing to alter output reading?

On my regular forum I have been told that this idea has already been deduced and does work to an extent. I will try to find some documentation for you guys.
Thanks DZASTER for posting that tidbit. Shows what I am specifically talking about so that it is perfectly clear.
